At 1:07 am, on March 20, Charles County Sheriff’s Officer C. Figgins observed a vehicle traveling 77 mph in a 50 mph zone on Route 6 in La Plata.
Officer Figgins attempted to pull the vehicle over but the suspect refused to stop. The vehicle slowed down but maintained 45 mph and turned south onto Route 5 in St. Mary’s County. Officer Malletto of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office assisted Officer Figgins in stopping the suspect at Route 5 and Mechanicsville Road.
The suspect was identified as James Walter Barry Jr., 47, of Mechanicsville and investigation revealed he was intoxicated. He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, fleeing and eluding a uniformed officer and speeding.
He was being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before a district court commissioner.
