On Wednesday, Jan. 6 at the stroke of 11 a.m., Calvert County resident and experienced Maryland legislator, George W. Owings, III formally announced his candidacy for Governor.

Despite the cold, windy conditions a great many people turned out to see one of Calvert’s most revered citizens launch his campaign. Throughout his speech, Owings stirred the shivering crowd with his position on many issues affecting Marylanders – everything from that state’s heavy tax burden and the raising of executive salaries to the environment and oysters and the death penalty.

In other parts of his speech, Owings emphasized the need to protect veterans and those that are charged with running the day-to-day operations of the state – government employees who have suffered the brunt of budget cuts, firings and furloughs.

When all was said and done, Owings thanked the crowd and vowed to take his uphill fight all the way through the September primary. “Beginning today, I will travel around the state, taking my message to the people of Maryland.”
