PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County Public Schools’ (CCPS) comprehensive maintenance plan is a roadmap to serving the schools’ maintenance and facilities needs at the highest level. With school starting soon and in light of a new fiscal year, the maintenance plan got the spotlight at the Aug. 7 Board of Education meeting.

Gregory Gott, director of school facilities, highlighted several key projects that have improved the function and student experience at Calvert schools.

The gym floor at Patuxent High School was completely renovated from the ground up following problems with water damage and termites. Staff also completed a renovation of the Northern High School softball infield and repaired the softball field fence at Huntingtown High School. The department transferred the Calvert High School sprinkler system off of a well to public water and purchased two new vans for the facilities department.

Finally, the team completed inspections of all of the elementary school playgrounds and has plans to upgrade the equipment at five schools for now through capital improvement project plans. Gott said he hopes to develop plans for the other elementary schools this year.

Gott also cited some challenges in his department, including a decreased budget internally and to hire contractors, and concerns about vehicles that will soon need to be replaced, either in parts or in their entirety. Gott said that the responsibilities of maintenance have increased without new staff being added and that his team is looking at cost-saving measures despite having to tackle significant challenges around the county.

“We will find ways to provide those services,” Gott said, though he warned that not addressing maintenance needs, particularly around vehicles, would cause the county to “dig ourselves into a hole.”
