CALVERT COUNTY, Md. — A self-portrait in pencil. A six-foot-tall seahorse made from recycled materials. A ceramic sculpture of a plate of spaghetti. These are just a few of the pieces of artwork on display in Calvert County Public Schools’ Lighthouse Art Gallery.
This virtual collection is available on YouTube and showcases artwork by students across the county in elementary, middle and high school. Students used a variety of mediums including mixed media, photography, ceramics, watercolor and more.
The Lighthouse Art Show is put on by the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, with students submitting throughout the year.
Art patrons and proud friends and family can check out the short video — it’s only 16 minutes long and boasts a wide range of talent and creative ideas. And if you’re deep into art, it’s utterly refreshing to see a kindergartener’s drawing of a child surrounded by flowers and the medium is simply “marker.”

The arts help students express creativity and shape their ideas. Art class is important across all levels of schooling because it helps students at multiple developmental stages find ways to connect and convey abstract thought. Art makes students better critical thinkers, and advocates for art in schools emphasize how it builds emotional intelligence and collaboration.
We get the exciting chance to see that creativity come to life. You can watch the 2025 show and previous years here.
