WALDORF, Md. — Every now and then, someone from your hometown makes it big — and makes it matter. Natasha Rothwell, the multi-hyphenate powerhouse behind some of today’s sharpest, funniest and most heartfelt television, is one of those people.

Before she was racking up Emmy nominations and creating award-winning shows, Rothwell was a student at Westlake High School in Waldorf, walking the same halls as countless Southern Maryland teens — dreaming big and moving with purpose. Her path from Charles County to Hollywood wasn’t straight or simple, but it was driven by grit, heart and a voice that demanded to be heard.

A military kid by upbringing, Rothwell’s early years were marked by movement and adaptation, which she’s credited with shaping her worldview. After graduating from Westlake and later earning a theater degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, she taught English in Japan, performed improv at the Tokyo Comedy Store and later found her comedic stride at the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York.

Her first big break came in 2014 as a writer on “Saturday Night Live.” But it was her breakout role as Kelli Prenny on HBO’s “Insecure” that made her a household name. Rothwell wasn’t just in front of the camera — she was also a writer and supervising producer, helping shape a show that changed the television landscape. In 2022, she earned an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress.

Then came “The White Lotus.” Her portrayal of spa manager Belinda Lindsey didn’t just tug at viewers’ hearts — it earned her Emmy nominations in both 2022 and 2025 for Outstanding Supporting Actress.

But Rothwell wasn’t done.

In 2024, she created, produced and starred in Hulu’s “How to Die Alone,” a critically acclaimed series following Melissa, a 35-year-old airport worker navigating self-discovery after a near-death experience. The show won her a Celebration of Cinema and Television Award and another NAACP Image Award nomination, proving once again that Rothwell doesn’t just take roles — she creates space for stories that haven’t been told.

And when she’s not making headlines on-screen, Rothwell is using her voice for advocacy. She’s been open about living with ADHD — calling herself “neurospicy” — and is a passionate supporter of mental health awareness, women’s rights and LGBTQIA+ representation in the media.

Currently, she’s developing a TV adaptation of the viral TikTok series “Who TF Did I Marry?” by Reesa Teesa, continuing her commitment to lifting up diverse, complicated, real voices.

Southern Maryland should be proud. Waldorf’s own Natasha Rothwell is more than an actress — she’s a trailblazer, a truth-teller and proof that great things grow right here at home.
