LUSBY, Md. — As the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce gets ready to hold its 30th annual “Tee’d Off with Purpose” Golf Classic, Chamber President Kathryn Maney has her own goals in mind: bring people together and have fun.

“Seeing people come together that ordinarily would not come together is so exciting,” Maney said. “We love seeing people who have never met come off the course and sit down at a table together.”

The Golf Classic, presented by Constellation, will take place at Chesapeake Hills Golf Course on Friday, June 19. Check-in begins at 8 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 9 a.m. This annual event has become one of the highlights of the year for the business community.

The reason for its popularity is simple: it’s fun and for a good cause. The proceeds go toward the Chamber’s scholarship fund, which has traditionally helped business students attend the College of Southern Maryland (CSM). This year, Maney says the scholarship has expanded to include students pursuing the trades as well.

The trades are a vital and growing part of the business community, as many people take their trade and start their own company. Maney said many members of the Chamber are tradespeople, and they make up a decent portion of referrals for when Calvert locals call the Chamber office looking for recommendations. The Chamber is excited to offer its scholarship support to uplift all types of business and future business owners.

In addition to going to a good cause, the event allows business leaders to connect in an authentic way — not that all deals are made on a golf course, but golf certainly offers a social element to take some of the pressure off networking.

“It’s a fun day out on the course and we see business cards flying,” Maney said. “Not everyone feels comfortable networking in the traditional way. Sometimes we see business partnerships develop, but a lot of the time it just takes the pressure off getting to know people in your community.”

Another unique part of the golf classic is the interactive holes, where businesses set up booths or tents to talk about what they do. These can get incredibly creative and range from businesses that give out free swag and talk about their product to groups that set up games and prizes. Maney described one that involved hitting a marshmallow with a golf iron.

Registration is open for the Golf Classic, and organizers encourage anyone interested to register as early as possible. This event is not limited to Chamber members only; anyone can join. Visit www.calvertchamber.org to register or learn more about sponsorship opportunities.

“We’re excited to get out there, supporting local businesses, supporting the chamber, supporting our scholarship. People love just getting out to go do something together.”
