As the holidays approach, Governor Hogan and Secretary of State Wobensmith warn citizens to beware of deceptive practices. Charities in Maryland and beyond depend upon the generosity of citizens to provide programs and services to those in need across our great State. During the holidays charities step up efforts to ask for donations. The holidays inspire a spirit of generosity when citizens want to help those in need. Unfortunately, scam artists are eager to take advantage of generous hearts.

What Charities in Maryland must register in Maryland? Charitable organizations that solicit donations from Maryland citizens are required to be registered with the Office of the Secretary of the State if they: collect $25,000 or more in direct public support; or use paid solicitors to raise funds for the organization. Additionally, smaller charities may be required to file a simple fund-raising notice with the Office of the Secretary of State.
