On Saturday, September 1, 2012 at approximately 1901 hours, the St. Mary’s County Emergency Communications Center made a general broadcast for a motor vehicle accident located on Flat Iron Road in the area of Highway to Heaven Lane in Great Mills. It was reported as a single vehicle accident (motorcycle), with personal injury. Troopers from the Leonardtown Barrack arrived on scene and made contact with the driver of the motorcycle (single occupant), Leslie Groves, 32, of Great Mills, who was being attended to by EMS personnel.
Troopers reported the subject was conscious, alert and responding to questions. Troopers were advised by EMS personnel that the subject was not considered to have life threatening injuries. The decision was made to transport Groves to Baltimore Shock Trauma Center via Maryland State Police Helicopter, Trooper 2.
Information was relayed to MSP Leonardtown from SYSCOM that the subject’s health was beginning to worsen. Upon receiving this information, the decision was made to have the accident reconstructed. An Advanced Collision Reconstructionist responded to the accident scene to conduct an investigation.
Continuous updates were being received from SYSCOM regarding the subject’s condition. On 09/01/12 at 2142 hours, Dr. Diaz pronounced Groves deceased. His Next of Kin were notified by personnel from the Leonardtown Barrack. At this time, alcohol does not appear to be a contributing circumstance; however, it appears speed was a factor. The investigation continues.
