Adam-David-Chaney

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — A La Plata man has been arrested on multiple assault and firearm charges after allegedly brandishing a handgun and threatening multiple individuals outside a residence in Lexington Park.

On Feb. 16, 2025, deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residential disturbance after receiving reports of a man armed with a firearm in a driveway.

According to court documents, Adam David Chaney, 41, arrived at the residence and demanded to see a person inside. Witnesses stated that Chaney produced a black handgun and pointed it at one of the individuals. The person retreated into the home, prompting another resident to step outside and confront Chaney.

A witness stated that when they stepped onto the front porch, they saw Chaney manipulating the firearm along his beltline before allegedly pointing the gun at them. Another individual then emerged from the residence, at which point Chaney allegedly pointed the gun at them as well.

After all individuals retreated inside the residence, a witness inside the home observed Chaney using a knife to slash the two driver’s-side tires of a Chevrolet Silverado, causing approximately $400 in damage.

Shortly after the incident, a witness received repeated phone calls from a number they identified as belonging to Chaney. Law enforcement traced the number back to Chaney’s La Plata residence.

Investigators conducted a firearms check, which revealed that Chaney owned a Glock 23 semi-automatic handgun, matching the description provided by the witnesses. Surveillance footage from the home’s front door also allegedly captured Chaney’s appearance, which was confirmed through his Maryland driver’s license photo.

At approximately 7:15 a.m. on Feb. 16, deputies arrived at Chaney’s residence and took him into custody without further incident. He was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center, where he was held without bond following his initial court appearance before Judge James Tanavage.

Chaney is facing multiple charges, including three counts of first-degree assault, which carries a penalty of up to 25 years per count; three counts of second-degree assault, which carries a penalty of up to 10 years per count; use of a firearm in a violent crime, which carries a mandatory 20-year sentence; and malicious destruction of property under $1,000, which is punishable by up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.

His next scheduled court appearance is set for March 13, 2025, in St. Mary’s District Court.
