Hidden Coffee Shop Inside The Naval Academy Is Worth The Trip To Annapolis

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — For anyone who loves coffee, finding a good local spot can be a challenge. There are plenty of local places to choose from, so picking somewhere special where you see yourself becoming a “regular” takes some thought.

But for fans of both coffee and the Naval Academy, 1845 Coffee might tick all the boxes. Tucked away on the Naval Academy campus, 1845 Coffee – Gatehouse is a small coffee shop with Navy-themed drinks in a serene location.

With all the coffee in Annapolis, 1845 Coffee – Gatehouse is special for its quiet, peaceful setting. It’s just off one of Annapolis’ city streets, but is incredibly calm and a great place to escape.

There are two other 1845 Coffee locations on the Naval Academy campus, but Gatehouse is the most popular for visitors because it has weekend hours and is a standalone building, rather than inside one of the campus buildings.

Here’s what you can expect when visiting 1845 Coffee at the Naval Academy.

Getting There

1845 Coffee – Gatehouse is open to the public, but being that it’s on the Naval Academy campus, you’ll need to enter through a visitor gate and follow the security protocols.

The shop is located at Gate 3, a pedestrian gate off Hanover Street in downtown Annapolis. Those with the proper clearance can enter directly through Gate 3. Visitors to the Naval Academy campus have to enter through the visitor gate, Gate 1.

We found it easiest to park downtown and walk through the pedestrian entrance at Gate 1. You’ll then go through the security building before you’re allowed to enter the campus. Once on campus, it’s a bit of a walk to the coffee shop, so we definitely recommend giving yourself plenty of time to walk and enjoy the scenery. Follow signs for the Chapel. 1845 Coffee is around the Chapel and behind it.

You can exit through Gate 3 when you’re done, even as a visitor, rather than walking back to the front entrance.

The Views

1845 Coffee – Gatehouse is a beautiful little building set in a quiet corner of campus. You’ll get to enjoy the greenery of the campus with a view of the Chapel and hear the sounds of church bells as you enjoy your drinks.

Gate 3 is off Hanover Street, a peaceful street lined with Annapolis’ famous colonial-style houses, so you really get the best of both worlds at this spot. You’ll get the beauty of the campus and the historical views of old Annapolis all in one.

The Menu

1845 Coffee is best known for its Navy-themed coffee menu. The shop serves espresso drinks, as well as iced and hot coffee and teas. The shop switches the menu seasonally or according to Naval Academy events or special occasions. During our visit, specialty summer drinks included The Anchor, MidStore Magic, Midshipman, Mustang and The Plebe.

Of course, you could also go with classic lattes and cappuccinos or the shop’s brewed iced tea. There was also an assortment of baked goods, as well as snacks and sandwiches.
