In celebration of National Archives Month, the Calvert County Commissioners presented the 2012 Historic Preservation Awards during their Tuesday, Nov. 20 meeting. This is the 24th year the Calvert County Historic District Commission (CCHDC) has organized the awards.

ย

According to historic planner Kirsti Uunila of the Department of Community Planning and Building, members of the CCHDC reviewed the nominations prior to making final sections. The awards were originally supposed to be presented at the boardโ€™s Oct. 30 meeting, which was cancelled due to superstorm Sandy.ย

Calvert Historical Society and craftsman Jeff Thompson were recognized for the restoration of five outbuildings at Linden in Prince Frederick. The 19th and 20th century in-town farmstead is owned by the county and serves as the societyโ€™s headquarters.ย โ€œCalvert County has a gem in Linden,โ€ said Thompson. โ€œIt was an honor, privilege and a lot of fun working on that project.โ€

Uunila explained the historical society was able to obtain funding to restore two brooding houses, a slaughterhouse, a chicken house and a processing building on the property.

ย

The second project award was presented to Marrick Homes and Kaine Homes for the rehabilitation of the 18th century- built John Williams House after the structure was relocated in the College Station subdivision of Prince Frederick. โ€œIt took a lot of work to be replicated,โ€ said Rick Bailey of Marrick Properties, of the dwellingโ€™s Victorian characteristics. โ€œWe were pleased with the way it turned out.โ€ Bailey reported that the home is now occupied.
