CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. — With primaries taking place across the country and midterms just a few months away, one local organization is focused on getting people to register and vote — no matter who it’s for.

The Calvert County Civic Literacy Coalition is hosting a “Rock the Vote” event this Friday, June 12. This family-friendly event will have free food, live entertainment, community organizations, voter registration and candidate engagements.

The event will take place at Kellam’s Field at 3825 Gordon Stinnett Ave. in Chesapeake Beach from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is free to all. The musicians performing are Akapella Dizzy, Brooke Foster and Red Eye Wright.

Rock the Vote is a nonprofit founded in 1990 by music executives to reach younger Americans and encourage them to vote. The group focuses outreach on those in the 18-24 age range and, on the national level, is known for its celebrity spokespeople and partnership with MTV. Local groups have hosted their own rock-the-vote-style events, from concerts to voter drives and more.

According to its website, the Calvert County Civic Literacy Foundation is a nonpartisan initiative dedicated to providing clear, accessible voter education to our community.

The aim of the organization is to ensure voters know their rights and the processes and have the information they need about candidates and the community in order to make informed decisions on Election Day. The group offers several resources, including a newsletter to help residents stay updated on the election, voting deadlines and more.

Residents can learn more about the voter registration process and candidates online.
