Prince Frederick, MD – November 4, 2019 – The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners will hold an “On Watch” memorial service Sunday, November 10, to recognize and honor veterans in Calvert County. The ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. at the “On Watch” monument site located at 14485 Dowell Road in Dowell. The ceremony is free and open to the public; those interested in attending are asked to RSVP by calling 410-326-2042, ext. 19.
The keynote speaker will be Naval Air Station (NAS) Patuxent River Executive Officer Capt. John Brabazon, with Calvert Marine Museum Board of Governors Vice Chair Jack Fringer to recognize local veterans. NAS Patuxent River Honor Guard will serve as flag bearers for the ceremony and Sara Zylack will perform the national anthem. The ceremony will conclude with a wreath laying ceremony and light refreshments.
The “On Watch” Memorial Statue is a bronze statue unveiled in 2007 by Maryland artist Antonio Tobias Mendez. The statue commemorates the people and work at the Solomons Amphibious Training Base, the nation’s first, during World War II. Between 1942 and 1945, around 68,000 sailors, marines, coast guardsmen and soldiers trained to make beach landings; these forces had major roles at landings in Guadalcanal, North Africa, Sicily, Normandy and the Pacific Solomons Islands.
