Prince Frederick, MD – We are honored to announce that the Alice W. Bowen Memorial Scholarship recipient is De’Ja McCleary and she received a one time scholarship of $5,000 to be awarded on her behalf to LaSalle University.  De’Ja is a graduating senior from Huntingtown High School and a student of Calvert’s Career and Technology Academy’s (CTA) Health Professions program. According to Kathleen Augustine, RN, MA, one of Deja’s teachers from CTA, “Deja demonstrates excellence in my classroom; she is dedicated to learning as much as she can about the health care industry and was chosen to participate in the high school mentorship program and worked during the summer at our local hospital.”

The Alice W. Bowen Memorial Scholarship was established by William Bowen in memory of his mother, Alice W. Bowen, a nurse and the first teacher at the Academy of Health Professions at the Calvert County Career and Technology Academy.

According to Mr. Bowen creator of the scholarship, the Alice W. Bowen Memorial Scholarship was established to help support a graduate of the Career and Technology Academy who pursues studies in a health related field. Bowen explained, “My mother’s legacy of serving her community, her students, and the school where she taught, lives on in this scholarship to help students, who, like her, strive to provide a valuable service to the public through their commitment to improving the health and well-being of others.”

According to De’ja’s grandmother, Regina L. Lawrence, “As a child, De’ja had a doctor’s kit. She loved to care for me and her baby dolls. Who knew this would grow into her passion to care for others. She is self-motivated and loves to care for others. This scholarship will help De’ja attend LaSalle University and become a Nurse Practitioner.”

This is an annual scholarship and the only one for students attending the Academy of Health at the Calvert Career and Technology Academy. Donations may be made to this Fund at any time.  For more information on creating your own named Charitable Fund to support scholarships or nonprofits, please contact Gretchen Hardman, Executive Director, Community Foundation of Southern Maryland, at 240-670-4483 (GIVE), email gretchen@cfsomd.org or visit our web at www.somdgiving.org.  We are devoted to making southern Maryland the best place to live and give.
