Celebrate the culture of Maryland’s first inhabitants with Indigenous Heritage Day on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at Historic St. Mary’s City. The day will be filled with activities to honor and celebrate the traditions of indigenous people that first lived on this land. Hands-on activities to be highlighted during the event will be archery, pottery, and digging out a log canoe. The Piscataway Indian Nation Dancers are scheduled to perform at 1:00 p.m. Museum guests will have the opportunity to learn the skills needed to make stone and bone tools, tan animal hides for clothing, or to prepare food.
All activities will take place near the Woodland Indian Hamlet exhibit on museum grounds. The Woodland Indian Hamlet is dedicated to exploring the rich history of the Yaocomaco people.
Event will take place from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 14. Admission ($10 adult; $9 seniors; $6 youth (6-18); and free for those 5 years and younger and Friends members) includes access to special activities, living history sites, and the St. John’s Site Museum.
