Is this your “broken-down” con man?

As highlighted in a recent readerโ€™s letter, published on January 29, a con artist has been blighting the St. Maryโ€™s County community and praying upon Good Samaritans with his crafted pleas for (financial) help.

This afternoon the St. Maryโ€™s County Sheriffโ€™s Office replied to the overwhelming response and comments pouring in from The Bay Net readers who, like the author of the letter, had also been tricked out of money or had contact with the scammer.

โ€œWe are out there working and looking for him,โ€ Lt. Alioto told The Bay Net. If you are approached by this man, Alioto says his best advice is to contact the Sheriffโ€™s Office so they can send someone out there to the scene. If you are approached โ€œuse caution as you would in your everyday life,โ€ advises Alioto. โ€œIf you feel uncomfortable stay at a distance, or stay in your vehicle, and contact us.โ€

If you come in contact with the man and you can record any physical characteristics or clothing, from a distance, it may be useful.

Lt. Alioto said Wednesday he has been reading comments on The Bay Net and the Sheriffโ€™s Office has been piecing together information on the suspect. They believe they may have identified the suspect, says Alioto, who is not yet releasing the name but did release a photograph.

The St. Maryโ€™s County Sheriffโ€™s Office is asking the assistance of any citizen who may have had contact with the subject. Please review the photograph, left, and if anyone has had contact with him at local establishments, asking for money, please contact Lt. Daniel D. Alioto, Commander of the Patrol Division for the St. Maryโ€™s County Sheriffโ€™s Office. 301-475-4200 Ext 1918.
