As part of National Diabetes Month, Health Connections at St. Mary’s Hospital is hosting a special Diabetes awareness event to help educate the Southern Maryland community about the disease. The free event will be on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the hospital Atrium.
The Diabetes awareness event will feature educational presentations on preventing and managing the disease. In addition, blood pressure checks, blood glucose checks and flu vaccines will also be available to participants.
About 24 million Americans have diabetes, including 5.7 million who don’t know they have it. In addition, about 57 million Americans have pre-diabetes, a condition which causes increased risk for heart disease and stroke. Most people with pre-diabetes don’t know they have it, making screening vital to diagnose these conditions.
