Tyreke D. Butler
Leonardtown, MD – On Aug. 30, St. Maryโs County Circuit Court Judge David Densford sentenced Tyreke D. Butler, 25 of Lexington Park to 50 years in the Maryland Department of Corrections.
On June 24 a jury found Butler guilty of the attempted first- degree murder and the first-degree assault of Robert R. Blake, use of a firearm to commit a felony, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, possession of a firearm with a felony conviction, and attempted conspiracy to induce testimony.
St. Maryโs County Senior Assistant Stateโs Attorney Daniel White stated, “The fact that Robert Blake is still alive is a miracle. Today is not a victory lap. It’s a sad day for Butler. He threw his opportunities away. I recommend the maximum sentence in this case.”
Butler was originally arrested last year after a witness observed him dragging another male into the wood line on Far Cry Road in Lexington Park. According to the witness, he โcould hear the male yelling, ‘please don’t kill me’ as he was on the ground,” according to charging documents.
“Butler is 25-years-old, he is not a drug runner or gun wielder. Butler has worked with me throughout this entire court case. My client is not a vicious individual he had been a model prisoner,” said Alexandra Bynum, who was Butlerโs attorney.
When Densford asked if Butler would like to say something before the consideration of a sentence, Butler responded, “I would like to apologize to my family, I would also like to appeal this case. I only had 10 days to get ready for this case.”
Densford responded, “You knew what you were facing.”
“This isnโt about the Navy or Army. You come from a good family, a loving mother, a father who was there most of your life. You chose a different path in your life. The evidence is overwhelming in this case,” said Densford.
Butler was sentenced to 50 years in the Department of Corrections. The first charge of attempted first-degree murder netted Butler 30 years, the first-degree assault merged with count one. In addition to the 30 years, two gun-related charges totaled in 20 years of additional time, running concurrently.
Butler was given 340 days of credit. He was also instructed that he has 30 days to appeal the sentencing of this case.
“This is a most serious crime in the most serious conditions,” said Densford.
