La Plata High School Inducts First Athletic Hall of Fame Class, Honoring Four Decades Of Warrior Excellence

LA PLATA, Md. — La Plata High School and the Athletic Hall of Fame Selection Committee are proud to officially announce the selections for the school’s historic Inaugural Hall of Fame Class of 2026.

Comprising 6 individual athletes, three highly decorated coaches, and one legendary state-championship team, this foundational class represents generations of competitive excellence and historic milestones in Warrior sports history.

Following a rigorous community nomination and data-verification process overseen by the selection committee, these ten foundational inductees were finalized via a unanimous consensus.

The LPHS Athletic Hall Of Fame Class Of 2026 Includes:

Individual Athletes

  • Don Money (Class of 1965): Had a 16-year MLB playing career with the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers. A 4-time MLB All-Star, member of the Brewers Wall of Honor, and former minor league Manager of the Year. He holds the record for 86 consecutive errorless games at third base and hit the first home run in the history of Veterans Stadium.
  • Tom Ross (Class of 1990): A 3-time individual Class 4A State Champion (1989 Cross Country, 1990 Indoor 1600m, and 1990 Outdoor 1600m). A 3-time Regional and SMAC champion, he ran collegiately at Penn State University and currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer of Brooks Running.
  • Matt Dyson (Class of 1990): A multi-sport athlete in football, basketball, soccer, and track who won the 1990 State Championship in the discus. He played linebacker for the University of Michigan, earning First-Team All-Big Ten honors and defensive MVP of the 1994 Holiday Bowl, before being drafted into the NFL by the Oakland Raiders.
  • Titus Green (Class of 2001): An All-State and All-Conference selection in both football and track. He was the 2001 State Champion in the 200m and long jump, amassed over 4,000 all-purpose yards and 400 tackles (including a 32-tackle game) in football, played Division I football at VMI, and later returned to coach at LPHS.
  • Eric Jobe (Class of 2006): A multiple-time All-Conference football selection and conference/regional wrestling champion who became La Plata’s first-ever individual Wrestling State Champion in 2006 (Heavyweight division). He went on to become a 3-year starter on the offensive line for West Virginia University.
  • Lillian Reese (Class of 2016): A 4-time Maryland State Champion across the triple jump, high jump, and long jump. She acquired 18 individual championship titles and 16 runner-up finishes at LPHS, placed 9th in the Pentathlon at the New Balance Indoor Nationals, and was named LPHS Female Student Athlete of the Year.

Coaches

  • Richard E. Williams: Dedicated 36 years to coaching LPHS cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track and field (1978–2016). He won 22 Regional Championships, 13 SMAC Championships, 1 Boys Indoor Track team State Title, and was named SMAC Coach of the Year 17 times.
  • Todd Sharp: Served as Head Wrestling Coach at LPHS, compounding a career dual-meet record of 185–20. He led the program to 6 Maryland State Team Titles (3 Dual Meet, 3 State Tournament), 8 Regional titles, 9 SMAC titles, and coached the first 7 individual state champions in school history.
  • Don Cooke: Head Baseball Coach and Athletic Director at LPHS who established foundational competitive standards before serving as the Principal of La Plata High School and the Charles County Supervisor of Athletics. He is an inductee into the Maryland State Athletic Directors Hall of Fame.

Championship Teams

  • 1977 Women’s Basketball Team: Captured the MPSSAA State Basketball Tournament Championship, establishing the foundational state-level championship milestone for all LPHS  athletic programs.

Induction Event Information

The formal induction will take place this fall and will feature an Inaugural Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony hosted by the La Plata High School Booster Club. In addition, inductees will be recognized at a public ceremony on the field at halftime of a La Plata Varsity Home Football Game, or at a prominent home event for their specific sport if they prefer.

Detailed scheduling and specific event logistics are currently being finalized and will be released by the Athletic Department later this summer.
