LA PLATA, Md. – The Men and Women of the La Plata Police Department Salute Community Difference Makers During #BlackHistoryMonth: LPPD salutes Karen R. Piper Mitchell, Deputy State’s Attorney at the State’s Attorney’s Office for Charles County. The State’s Attorney’s Office serves the citizens of Charles County by enforcing criminal laws through prosecution within the geographical borders of the county. Mrs. Mitchell was hired as an Assistant State’s Attorney’s by then State’s Attorney, Leonard C. Collins, Jr. in 1999. On January 3, 2011, she became the first female deputy when the current State’s Attorney’s, Anthony B. Covington, Sr. was sworn in.

Mrs. Mitchell has been a life-long resident of Maryland. She graduated as valedictorian from Largo Senior High School in 1990. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University in 1994 and a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1998. After graduating from law school, Mrs. Mitchell served a law clerk in the Prince George’s County Circuit Court.
