LA PLATA, Md. — The scoops are back at Landon’s Ices & Creams.
The downtown La Plata ice cream shop reopened Friday, July 31, after a temporary closure that began Wednesday, July 15, when the Charles County Department of Health suspended its food service facility license.
The Health Department previously told The BayNet that the inspection was prompted by a customer complaint and that the license suspension was issued in the interest of public safety.
In a statement provided to The BayNet, Landon’s said the closure involved a refrigeration issue and that the affected equipment has since been replaced.
“Following the temporary closure, we worked closely with the Charles County Health Department to address the refrigeration issue, replace the affected equipment, and complete all required corrective actions,” the business said. “We appreciate the Health Department’s guidance throughout the process and are pleased to have met the requirements necessary to reopen.”
Landon’s said it also used the closure to strengthen its internal procedures and reinforce its commitment to food safety and product quality.
“Our priority has always been serving our customers safe, high-quality ice cream in an environment they can trust,” the business said.
The owners acknowledged that the closure created significant challenges for the small business but said the encouragement received from customers, friends and neighbors served as a reminder of the community’s support.
“We are deeply grateful for the encouragement, patience, and kindness shown to us by our customers, friends, and neighbors during this time,” the statement said.
Food safety has a personal connection to the family behind Landon’s. Owners Lamar and Shannon Hinson founded the business after searching for ice cream options that were safe for their children, who have peanut and tree nut allergies. The family-owned shop opened its downtown La Plata location at 505 Charles St. on Oct. 5, 2019.
“Making homemade ice cream and serving our community is what we love to do, and we are thrilled to be back doing what we enjoy most,” the business said. “We look forward to welcoming everyone back through our doors and creating many more sweet memories together.”
