LA PLATA, Md. — Landon’s Ices & Creams in downtown La Plata is temporarily closed after the Charles County Department of Health summarily suspended the business’s food service license on Tuesday, July 14.
A “Summarily Suspended” notice posted on the front door states the action was taken by order of the Charles County Department of Health under Maryland food service regulations, COMAR 10.15.03.
The notice lists the reasons for the suspension as “Foods not protected from adulteration, spoilage” and “Foods not maintained in temperature compliance.” The order is dated July 14, 2026, and signed by Charles County Health Officer Dr. Dianna E. Abney.
A Charles County Department of Health spokesperson told The BayNet the inspection that led to the suspension was conducted in response to a customer complaint. The spokesperson said the department determined it was in the best interest of public health to summarily suspend the facility’s food service license until the violations are corrected.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, food is considered adulterated if it contains harmful substances, consists of filthy, putrid or decomposed material, or has been prepared, packed or held under insanitary conditions that could contaminate the food or make it harmful to consumers. The FDA also requires food to be protected from contamination and handled in a way that ensures it remains safe for consumption. Temperature compliance refers to keeping foods at required hot or cold holding temperatures to limit the growth of bacteria that can cause foodborne illness.
In a statement posted to Facebook on July 14, Landon’s Ices & Creams said it is working to address the health department’s concerns before reopening.
“Landon’s Ices & Creams is temporarily closed while we complete required health department corrections and prepare for follow-up approval to reopen. We take this seriously because your trust matters. Thank you for your patience and support. We’ll share reopening updates as soon as we’re cleared to welcome you back.”

Landon’s Ices & Creams opened at 505 Charles St. in downtown La Plata on Oct. 5, 2019. The family-owned business was founded by Lamar and Shannon Hinson after searching for ice cream options that were safe for their children, who have peanut and tree nut allergies.
A summary suspension is an emergency enforcement action that immediately suspends a food service facility’s operating license when the health department determines conditions may pose a public health risk. A business may not reopen until the cited violations have been corrected and the health department authorizes it to resume operations.
When asked about the closure, owner Lamar Hinson told The BayNet he is still waiting for more information and will provide an update as soon as additional details become available.
