ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said Tuesday that he has no intention of seeking elected office again, ending months of speculation about a potential political comeback.

In a statement released Jan. 20, Hogan said, “I care deeply about the state of Maryland, and I remain concerned about the direction of our nation’s politics, but I have no intention of running for office again. It was an honor to serve, but it’s time to look forward, not back. The fight for Maryland and America’s future does not belong to any one person or any one party; it belongs to the people.”

Hogan, a two-term Republican governor who served from 2015 to 2023, had been widely mentioned as a possible contender in future statewide races, including the 2026 gubernatorial election. His announcement appears to put those discussions to rest.

Known for his centrist approach and bipartisan appeal, Hogan maintained high approval ratings during much of his tenure in a state dominated by Democratic voters. Since leaving office, he has remained active in national political discussions, often advocating for moderation, civility and cooperation across party lines.

While Hogan did not outline specific plans for his post-political future, his statement emphasized civic responsibility and the importance of public engagement beyond elected office.

Political observers say Hogan’s decision removes one of the most recognizable Republican figures from Maryland’s future electoral landscape, potentially reshaping the field as parties look ahead to upcoming elections.
