WALDORF, Md. — A Waldorf man has been charged with fourth-degree burglary after police say he unlawfully entered an apartment residence in Waldorf and fled when officers arrived.
Jakhi Malek Horn, 18, of Waldorf, was arrested Feb. 1, 2026, following a response by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office to a reported break-in at an apartment complex on Hope Circle, according to court documents.
Deputies were dispatched shortly after 9:35 p.m. for a report of a possible burglary in progress at a vacant apartment. Upon arrival, officers said they could hear voices coming from inside the residence. A records check indicated the unit was vacant.
According to the statement of probable cause, officers knocked on the front door and observed a subject looking out from a second-story window before moving away. A loud banging noise was then heard, which police said was consistent with someone running through the residence toward the rear exit.
Officers positioned at the back of the building observed multiple individuals flee through the rear door in different directions. Police said Horn slipped on ice while running and fell to the ground, where he was taken into custody without further incident.
Horn was identified through a records check. During a search incident to arrest, officers reported locating a small clear baggie containing what appeared to be raw cannabis. A subsequent search of the residence found no furniture or signs of occupancy. Officers noted a smoky haze inside the apartment and a strong odor consistent with burnt cannabis, as well as lighter fluid on the counter and ash residue on the carpet.
Investigators stated the rear door was identified by a witness as the point of entry. No damage to the door was observed, and it was unclear how entry was gained. No items were reported stolen.
Horn was transported to the Charles County Detention Center and charged with fourth-degree burglary of a dwelling, a misdemeanor offense under Maryland law. He invoked his right to remain silent after being advised of his rights.
Court records show Horn was released on his own recognizance on Feb. 2.
A trial scheduling hearing is set for March 20 in Charles District Court.
