LEONARDTOWN, Md. — On Nov. 18, 2024, the Leonardtown Planning & Zoning Commission unanimously voted to approve a concept plan for a new Evidence Storage Facility and Headquarters for the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Department. The project will consist of two phases, with the Evidence Storage Facility being the subject of Phase I and the new Sheriff’s Headquarters the subject of Phase II.

The new Evidence Storage Facility will occupy an area of approximately 20,611 square feet, not including parking and necessary public infrastructure and utilities. It will feature 24 regular parking spots, two handicapped parking spots, and 133 impound parking spots for vehicles impounded by the Sheriff’s Department.

The new Sheriff’s Headquarters will occupy an area of approximately 26,750 square feet and will be two stories tall. It will have 20 public parking spots, 214 private parking spots, and eight handicapped parking spots.

Both buildings will be located just north of the current Sheriff’s Department, east of the Maryland State Police Barracks and St. Mary’s County Board of Elections. The total property area will cover around 85 acres.

Because this project is still in the concept phase of development, there are no further details on the appearance or aesthetics of the buildings.

Representatives from the Sheriff’s Department, who attended the meeting, assured that neither phase will inconvenience nearby residents, with a line of trees continuing to act as a property boundary.
