Lexington Park Man Charged After Traffic Stop Turns Into Struggle With Deputy

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — A Lexington Park man is facing assault and resisting arrest charges after authorities say a traffic stop over illegal window tint escalated into a struggle with deputies.

Jayquan Malyk Musgrove, 26, was charged with obstructing and hindering, resisting or interfering with arrest and second-degree assault. He also received several traffic citations.

According to charging documents, a St. Mary’s County sheriff’s deputy observed a gold 2001 Chevrolet Silverado traveling along Great Mills Road on Aug. 4 and believed the tint on the vehicle’s front windows was darker than Maryland’s legal limit.

Another deputy stopped the truck near Yorktown Road and Cabot Place in Lexington Park.

Court documents state Musgrove repeatedly refused requests to provide his driver’s license and vehicle registration. During the encounter, deputies said Musgrove reached toward the back seat and grabbed what appeared to be a balled-up white shirt.

The deputy reported asking Musgrove at least seven times for his license and registration. Musgrove allegedly continued refusing and eventually rolled the driver’s window most of the way up, limiting the deputy’s ability to see inside the heavily tinted vehicle.

Musgrove then began recording the encounter with a cellphone while continuing to refuse requests for identification, according to charging documents.

Deputies ultimately told Musgrove he was being placed under arrest for obstructing and hindering the investigation.

Court documents state Musgrove was ordered at least three times to exit the truck but refused. Deputies then removed him from the vehicle.

Once outside, Musgrove allegedly refused repeated commands to place his hands behind his back and briefly struggled with deputies before being handcuffed.

Authorities said a records check subsequently showed Musgrove was driving without a license and had an outstanding Maryland State Police bench warrant related to driving without a license.

The confrontation allegedly continued while deputies searched Musgrove following his arrest.

According to charging documents, Musgrove repeatedly pulled away while being held by his wrists and handcuffs and attempted to reach toward the front of his waistband. Two deputies were eventually needed to keep him from reaching around.

During the struggle, Musgrove allegedly grabbed one deputy’s right ring finger and twisted it, causing pain before the deputy was able to free his hand.

A tint meter was later used on the truck’s front windows and showed visible light transmission of 18%, according to court documents.

Musgrove was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center.

He was later released on a $250 unsecured personal bond.

A trial is set for Sept. 21 in St. Mary’s District Court.
