Aji Sunjaya (A.J.) and his older brother Jusup Sunjaya (pronounced Joseph) have been cutting hair together for over ten years now. As teenagers the brothers were sent here by their parents from Indonesia to live with family and go to school.
After high school A.J. watched his older brother succeed as a professional hair stylist and decided to follow in his footsteps. The brothers both attended Academy of Professional Barber/ Stylist in Wheaton, MD. They went on to work cutting hair in Mechanicville, MD for ten years. They have just recently moved on to the next phase in the plan and have opened AJ’S Barbershop in the Wildewood Shopping Center in California, MD.
Visiting AJ’s Barbershop was quite an experience. Along with our photographer, we sat with the brothers for a while and heard of their long road to becoming very successful business owners. The hard work and years of savings has clearly paid off.
The shop has a higher standard than any other shop in the area for men. It’s a current twist of the classic barbershop. A long row of leather salon chairs for cutting make it comfortable to watch the two 55” Sony flat screens so there are no worries about missing the last touchdown score. Some of the extras at AJ’s Barbershop make this business stand out from rest are hot towel shaves, outstanding customer service, clean equipment, and my favorite, the quiet vacuum cutting system that allows for no mess haircuts. Get your hair cut on your lunch break or even before a Friday night out and leave no extra hair on your suits or your date.
As I watched the men cut hair I spoke to a few clients and there were two words that came up frequently, clean and fast. I had one gentleman tell me that he drove down from Mechanicsville every Friday just to see A.J. and Jusup that he just doesn’t trust anyone else. Another client said that he paid a few dollars more to come to AJ’s Barber Shop instead of a chain salon because it is cleaner, they cut hair fast, and most of the regular hair places don’t even know how to cut in the styles guys want. He also stated “you’re in and out with no problems and you get what you ask for.”
The charge for the services that AJ’s Barbershop offers is a lot less than I would think to charge considering what the clients receive, but A.J. said “It’s the customers’ satisfaction we worry about, not price.”
With this in mind, AJ’s Barbershop is having an open house next week. They invite everyone to visit. They would like to introduce themselves, their services, and give everyone a break this holiday season with $10 haircuts all day!
AJ’s Barbershop is also a Toys for Tots drop off location, so bring an unwrapped toy for a child in need.
