Barstow, MD – The emphasis was on having fun and pretending to be someone (or something) else. The Optimist Club of Calvert’s annual Halloween Party and Costume Parade was held Sunday afternoon, Oct. 25 in the main building of the Calvert County Fairgrounds.

The party is held for the enjoyment of children ages one to 13 and their parents. In addition to bags of candy and plates of cookies, a balloon artist was on hand. Several games were also played prior to the start of the costume competitions, which were done in age groups.

Contestants included pirates, princesses, a mermaid, a rabbit popping out of a top hat, a Smartphone, cats, animation characters and two robots. A panel of distinguished judges determined the winners in the various age categories. Those deemed outstanding in their age group were presented with trophies.

Upcoming events for the local Optimists include Youth Appreciation Week—saluting outstanding seniors from Calvert’s four public high schools—the annual Christmas Tree Sale, which begins the day after Thanksgiving at the Calvert Village Shopping Center in Prince Frederick; and the annual Christmas Parade. The latter event is to be held Sunday Dec. 6 in Prince Frederick. The Optimists team up with the Calvert County Fair Board to present the parade.
