The Board of County Commissioners recognize the Northern High School Varsity volleyball team for winning a state title. Under the leadership of Coach Bobby Gibbons and Assistant Coach Jackie Chamberlin, the Patriots won the 2015 Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association 3A Championship and finished the season with a 21-0 record. The board honors Northern High School (NHS) student Matt Bennett for winning the 3A State Individual Championship in cross country. Under the leadership of Head Coach Josh Dawson, Matt finished with the second fastest time among all four classifications, beating the competition by eight 100ths of one second. Matt also helped the NHS cross country team win its seventh consecutive 3A South Regional Title and third consecutive Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) Championship, finishing the regular season with a 13-0 SMAC record with Matt named Athlete of the Year for two consecutive years. Over the past four years, Matt and the NHS cross country team have had a record of 46-4 and have been a dominate force within SMAC.
