As they do every year, Calvert Elks Lodge 2620 conducted the annual Flag Day Ceremony on Veterans Green in front of the Calvert County Courthouse. The ceremony was held Tuesday, June 10, a few days before the official day of observance, June 14, which falls on a Saturday this year.
“It gives me goosebumps,” Calvert Circuit Court Judge Marjorie Clagett said earlier in the day about the annual ceremony. Clagett stated the patriotic display makes her realize what a significant role her son, a Navy Seal, and all members of the Armed Forces, play in the protection of the nation.
With the help of Calvert County Commissionersโ President Pat Nutter [R] and Circuit Court Judge Mark S. Chandlee, along with members of Cub Scout Pack 262 and Boy Scout Troop 1792, the nine flags of the United States were honored.
Those flags are: The Pine Tree, The Snake, The Grand Union, The 13 Stars and Stripes, The 15 Stars and Stripes, The Stars and Stripes, The 48 Stars and Stripes, The 50 Stars and Stripes, and The POW-MIA Flag honoring the Armed Services.
Other ceremony participants were the Calvert County Sheriffโs Office Color Guard, the Rev. Robert Conway, who delivered an invocation; and Brooke Steuart Swann, who sang โThe Star Spangled Bannerโ and โGod Bless America.โ
The lodgeโs Exalted Ruler Jill Wyles presented representatives from Calvert Hospice and the Calvert County Senior Council with checks, each totaling $1,000 and raised by the local Elks for the organizations.
A light lunch was served on the courthouse grounds afterwards.
