St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Safe Exchange Zones

LEONARDTOWN, Md. — Whether you’re arranging a child custody exchange, completing an online marketplace sale or meeting someone you don’t know well, choosing the right location can make all the difference. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is helping residents meet with confidence by offering Safe Exchange Zones—designated areas designed with safety and peace of mind in mind.

These Safe Exchange Zones are monitored 24 hours a day by video surveillance, providing a secure environment for a wide range of in-person interactions. From parents coordinating custody exchanges to residents buying or selling items through online platforms, the zones offer a neutral, well-lit location where safety comes first.

Safe Exchange parking is available at all St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office district locations, making it convenient no matter where you live in the county:

  • District 1: 37575 Charlotte Hall School Road, Charlotte Hall
  • Headquarters: 23150 Leonard Hall Drive, Leonardtown
  • District 3: 23125 Camden Way, California
  • District 4: 21633 Great Mills Road, Lexington Park

Visitors are encouraged to look for the posted Safe Exchange Zone signs when they arrive. While deputies may not be present at every exchange, the constant surveillance serves as a strong deterrent and an added layer of protection.

In a time when many interactions begin online and end face-to-face, the Sheriff’s Office’s Safe Exchange Zones offer a simple solution: a public, monitored space where community members can meet with greater confidence. When safety matters, St. Mary’s County provides a place to meet with peace of mind.

  1. Leonardtown is not monitored. Just because there’s a camera on it doesn’t mean the police are paying attention. My family member tried custody exchanges there and the camera didn’t stop the threats, insults, and menacing invasion of personal space, all in front of the children. The police didn’t come out of their warm building.
