LUSBY, Md. — A Leonardtown woman and a St. Leonard man both face assault charges after what authorities describe as a domestic dispute over family tensions that allegedly escalated into mutual violence, leaving both parties bloodied and under arrest. Hailey Lynn Sulima, 18, of Leonardtown, and Jakwon Terelle Kelson, 19, of St. Leonard, were both arrested following the Oct. 5, 2025, incident, according to court records.
Calvert County sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence on Fargo Road after Sulima called 911 to report a domestic incident in progress. Court records show she advised dispatchers that Kelson was attempting to take her vehicle without permission. Authorities said significant screaming and crying could be heard in the background during the emergency call, with a male voice, believed to be Kelson’s, stating he was not trying to steal the vehicle.
Documents reveal dispatchers noted the situation appeared to be escalating physically during the 911 call. Court filings indicate Sulima told dispatchers she had been struck in the face and was bleeding.
Deputies located Sulima walking along the roadway upon arrival. Court records state she was observed by officers to be visibly distraught, crying and speaking on the phone, with active bleeding from her right hand. Authorities reported she declined medical attention when offered. Another deputy simultaneously contacted Kelson at the residence.
Sulima told investigators the argument began over a disagreement involving her mother and Kelson’s grandmother. Court filings show she alleged Kelson took her vehicle keys and later threw them during the dispute.
According to court records, Sulima alleged Kelson threw her to the ground in the gravel driveway, causing her knuckles to bleed. Documents state she claimed that while on the ground, Kelson punched her in the side of the head. Authorities noted no visible injuries or marks were observed on her head at the time of the report.
Kelson presented a different account to investigators. Court filings show he had visible injuries, including a bleeding wrist, a peeled section of skin on his left hand and a scratched, bleeding leg when deputies contacted him. Documents indicate he declined medical treatment.
Kelson told authorities the incident began due to Sulima’s negative attitude toward his grandmother. Court records show he said he asked her to leave, and when she refused, he threw her car keys outside in an attempt to get her to leave the residence. Documents reveal Kelson admitted to taking her vehicle keys and throwing them but claimed it was only to remove her from the property.
According to court filings, Kelson stated he went outside to use his vape when Sulima exited the residence and began physically assaulting him. Authorities said he assisted officers in locating the keys, which were returned to Sulima.
Court documents note a significant size difference between the parties. Records indicate Sulima is approximately 5 feet 1 inch tall and weighs about 90 pounds, while Kelson is approximately 6 feet tall and weighs about 150 pounds.
Based on physical evidence, visible injuries to both parties and corroborating statements from both individuals, authorities arrested Sulima and Kelson on second-degree assault charges. Documents show both were transported without incident to the Calvert County Detention Center. Court records indicate photographs of all visible injuries were taken and uploaded for documentation. Filings show neither party expressed a desire to pursue charges against the other.
Both Sulima and Kelson face one count of second-degree assault, a misdemeanor carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment and a $2,500 fine under Maryland law if convicted. Both were released on personal recognizance following their initial appearances on Oct. 6, 2025.
Court records show Sulima initially waived her right to an attorney but was later determined eligible for public defender representation. The Calvert County Public Defender’s Office entered an appearance on her behalf on Oct. 7, 2025. Documents state defense counsel filed motions for a speedy trial and discovery inspection on the same date. Kelson initially waived his right to an attorney at his initial appearance.
Both Sulima and Kelson are scheduled for trial on Nov. 10, 2025, at 1 p.m. in Calvert County District Court. The mutual arrest reflects circumstances in which authorities determined both parties allegedly engaged in unlawful physical contact, regardless of who initiated the 911 call. All proceedings will take place in Prince Frederick. The State’s Attorney’s Office for Calvert County is prosecuting the case.
