WALDORF, Md. — A new business in Charles County is helping seniors and their families bridge weekend transportation gaps and stay connected. Magic Touch Companion Helping Hands was launched after founder Cyprian Ambe moved from Bowie to Waldorf in 2022 and saw a need he couldn’t ignore.

His company, Magic Touch Companion Helping Hands, offers seniors and caregivers something they often struggle to find — safe, respectful door-to-door transportation and simple in-home tech support. The service takes older adults wherever they need to go — whether it’s a doctor’s appointment, the grocery store, a worship service or a family gathering — and also offers one-on-one guidance with phones, tablets, email and video-calling apps to help them stay independent and connected.

“I call it care beyond transportation,” Ambe said. “I just want to give people the freedom to get where they need to go and the ability to stay connected to family and friends.”

Ambe and his family chose Charles County for its strong schools, quieter neighborhoods and the chance to live closer to farmland, where they could pick up fresh fruits and vegetables from local stands and farmers markets. More than anything, he said, he was drawn by the sense of community — a welcome change from the busier pace they left behind in Bowie. He wanted not just to live here but to get to know his neighbors and enjoy the community as a family.

As he settled into Waldorf, Ambe began to notice older residents waiting at bus stops or relying on VanGO shuttles, often sharing rides with strangers just to reach medical appointments or church. Watching them face long waits and limited options convinced him there should be a more personal and dependable service for seniors and their caregivers.

With a background in IT and prior experience in home health support, he decided to merge his skills to meet that need — and wanted a name that expressed the heart behind his work. Ambe said the word “magic” felt right because he wanted the name to capture both the power of a helping hand and the feeling of comfort that comes when someone shows up to help.

“Magic has power, the hands of God are magic. The word ‘magic’ means something is happening, that there’s power in it. Helping people should feel that way — like you’re doing something meaningful that changes someone’s day,” Ambe explained.

Ambe believes that even a simple ride across town or help setting up a smartphone can give seniors a sense of relief, confidence and independence. Assisting people to stay connected to their families, friends and the community is at the heart of his mission.

Starting the company wasn’t easy: Obtaining commercial insurance for a startup proved challenging, and even buying the right van required an out-of-state purchase. But Ambe stayed determined, motivated in part by memories of his own grandparents, who lacked reliable support and care in their later years.

Magic Touch currently operates Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., filling the weekend gaps that often leave families scrambling. The seven-seat van is reserved for one client at a time — no strangers sharing the ride — and whoever books the trip decides who else rides along. Based in Waldorf, the service now covers Waldorf, La Plata, White Plains and nearby areas, with plans to expand into St. Mary’s and Calvert counties. Weekday hours and a second van are expected by February.

Since launching, Magic Touch has received warm messages from local families grateful for a dependable option close to home. Neighbors have even reached out to volunteer their time, a sign that the service has tapped into a real community need.

For Ambe, knowing he can help neighbors get where they need to go safely and with dignity — and give families peace of mind — is the most rewarding part of his work.

“Helping people is the real magic,” he said.
