Emergency personnel gather outside Tobacco Kings on Crain Highway in Waldorf on Tuesday night, Aug. 26, 2025, after a man allegedly shot himself following an earlier shooting at a nearby apartment complex.

WALDORF, Md. — A 24-year-old man was hospitalized Tuesday night, Aug. 26, 2025, after authorities said he opened fire near a Waldorf apartment complex, then fled across the street to a vape shop before shooting himself.

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office said the initial gunfire was reported Tuesday at the JSB Apartments in the 2100 block of Crain Highway, where investigators later recovered shell casings.

Moments later, the suspect crossed Crain Highway (U.S. 301) to Tobacco Kings, located at 2160 Crain Highway directly across from the apartments, where witnesses said he acted erratically inside the store before walking outside and firing a shot that struck his own hand.

Deputies said a firearm was recovered at the scene, and charges are pending as the investigation continues.

The suspect was transported to an area hospital with sheriff’s deputies on board.

Authorities have not released his name. No other injuries were reported.
