NEWBURG, Md. – On December 20, a circuit court arrest warrant was issued for Richard William Ellis, age 47, of Newburg, for 16 counts of first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and other related offenses.

Ellis was charged in connection with an incident that occurred on September 20 near Waverly Place in which it was reported that he pointed a firearm toward a loaded school bus from Piccowaxen Middle School which was dropping off students for the day.

Officers initiated an investigation and presented the case to the Charles County State’s Attorney’s Office and a warrant was issued.

On December 23, members of the Judicial Services Division attempted to locate Ellis at his residence, but he was not there. Ellis turned himself in later that day at the CCSO’s District 1 station.

He is currently being held at the Charles County Detention Center without bond. Officers Wagner and Otey investigated.

The CCSO was accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) in 2001 and has since earned the highest rating of Excellence. Established in 1658, the CCSO is one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the United States. For more information, visit www.ccso.us. 1. As someone who got arrested on false charges by overzealous cops in the past, I hope they have real evidence against this person and didn’t just go with he said/she said claims…

  2. If allegations are true , he deserves to have all guns confiscated , yet it still wont stop him from getting another gun , for having a lack of discretion , remove anger issues or remedy his mental issues.. He is a threat to society, however, we realize that their are many more just like him that walk amongst us. This gun / people issue will never come to a resolution .

  3. WHO in their right mind would do such a thing? If he truly did this don’t give him a slap on the wrist, hammer him! Pointing a firearm at a school bus? What is wrong with people?

    1. Wish they told the whole story he didn’t have 1 but yes he was protecting his child! Know the whole story before you judge cause I’m sure anyone would Protect their kids at any cause

    1. Protecting your kids is not waving a gun around a bus. If students were coming off the bus to come get his kid, yes. But not at a bus moving away from you.
