LA PLATA, Md. — A La Plata man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he caused a disturbance while intoxicated at a local motel, repeatedly ignoring commands from law enforcement.

David Andrew Wathen, 44, of La Plata, Maryland, was arrested on April 18, 2026, following the incident at a motel along Crain Highway, according to court documents.

Deputies responded around 10:52 p.m. for a report of a disturbance at the establishment. Upon arrival, officers heard a man yelling and learned from a nearby tenant that the situation stemmed from an intoxicated individual causing ongoing issues in the area.

According to the statement of probable cause, Wathen was observed with bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech, and a strong odor of alcohol. Investigators say he admitted to drinking earlier in the evening and was continuing to argue and follow another individual around the property.

Officers initially issued Wathen a warning and instructed him to stop yelling and causing a disturbance. However, authorities say he continued the behavior, leading to further complaints from individuals at the motel.

Deputies later observed Wathen again yelling and arguing, prompting his arrest.

Wathen is charged with failing to obey a reasonable and lawful order, disorderly conduct, and intoxicated public disturbance.

He was released on his own recognizance following his arrest.

Under Maryland law, failing to obey a lawful order and disorderly conduct are each punishable by up to 60 days in jail and/or a $500 fine, while intoxicated public disturbance carries up to 90 days in jail and/or a $100 fine.

A hearing is set for June 2, 2026 in Charles District Court.
