On April 14, 2015, Deputy LaFave responded to a lookout broadcast by the Emergency Communications Center for a burgundy vehicle operating in a reckless manner.
Deputy LaFave observed the vehicle stopped in the travel portion of the roadway on Three Notch Road at the Route 4 intersection. The vehicle remained stopped after the traffic signal turned green.
The operator, identified as James Edwards Stewart III, age 38, of Lexington Park, was slumped over the wheel. Stewart was breathing but not responsive. Deputy LaFave placed the vehicle in park and was able to then wake Stewart up.
Deputy LaFave detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage and field sobriety tests were subsequently administered. Stewart did not pass the tests satisfactorily and was placed under arrest.
A search of the vehicle was conducted at which time a suspectedย oxycodone tablet was located in the center cup holder. Stewartโs driving privilege in Maryland was also suspended and revoked. He was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Maryโs County Detention Center.
He was charged with Possession Controlled Dangerous Substance: Not Marijuana, Driving Under the Influence, Driving Without a License, Driving While Suspended/Revoked, and Negligent Driving.
