EDGEWATER, Md. — A 63-year-old Edgewater man was arrested Monday, February 17, 2025, following a two-vehicle crash in Anne Arundel County that left a woman critically injured

Police, fire and rescue personnel responded to the crash around 1:50 p.m. on Mitchells Chance Road near Hamlet Club Drive.

A preliminary investigation determined that a 2020 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by Joseph Henry Illig Jr., 63, of Edgewater, crossed the center of the roadway and collided head-on with a 2015 Ford pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the Ford, a 78-year-old man from Upper Marlboro, was not injured. However, his 74-year-old female passenger suffered critical injuries and was flown by a Maryland State Police helicopter to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Illig, who was uninjured in the crash, was arrested and charged with multiple alcohol-related offenses, including driving under the influence and driving while impaired. Court records indicate he has two prior convictions for similar violations. He also faces a felony charge of causing life-threatening injury by motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

Authorities have not released further details on the condition of the injured woman. The crash remains under investigation by the Anne Arundel County Police Department.
