A small classroom fire at a specialized education facility in La Plata is under investigation, state authorities are reporting.
According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the blaze occurred Friday, Feb. 21 at High Road School of Southern Maryland on Catalpa Drive at approximately 9:27 a.m.
“The fire occurred within the corner of an occupied classroom inside the school,” Dfm. John Ray stated. “The fire was discovered by the occupants of the classroom and was quickly extinguished by staff using a fire extinguisher. There was no activation of the fire alarm system or sprinkler system due to the early stages in which the fire was discovered and then quickly extinguished by staff.”
There were no injuries reported and damage was estimated at $100.
Ray stated in his report that the preliminary cause was “incendiary.”
The two-story facility is owned by Specialized Education Incorporated.
