BALTIMORE — What if escaping Baltimore was as challenging as surviving The Oregon Trail? A Maryland software engineer has turned that idea into reality with The Baltimore Trail, a free browser-based game packed with local landmarks, inside jokes, familiar roadblocks and plenty of Charm City spirit. Inspired by the classic educational game that captivated generations, this unique spin-off is earning praise from Marylanders who see their own experiences reflected in its pixelated journey down the Chesapeake Bay.
Video games are among the most popular forms of entertainment in the modern era, and that popularity is in part thanks to trailblazing titles that redefined the genre. Classic video games like Pong, Pac-Man and The Oregon Trail helped build a fan base of dedicated gamers around the world, and these blockbuster titles have often been the recipients of many fan-made spin-offs.
The Oregon Trail is a strategy computer game first released in 1971, offering a glimpse into what pioneers went through in the 1800s. Its popularity earned it many fan spin-offs, including a recently released title known as The Baltimore Trail.
The BayNet reached out to the creator of The Baltimore Trail, Katie Dexter, to learn what prompted her to develop the Maryland-themed internet game.
Dexter is a software engineer who had a simple reason for developing her own version of The Oregon Trail. She wanted to build a game that had personal meaning to her, which also captured the essence of the city in which she has spent so much of her life.
“The idea came to me recently during a work trip that included a hackathon project. Several of my colleagues built games for their hackathon project, and when I got home, I decided I wanted to build a game that was personal to me. That also aligned with a trip to Chestertown with friends, where I ended up in random traffic and other detours,” Dexter explained.
“I grew up in Northeast Baltimore, and every summer was spent thinking about getting out for a while. Ocean City, a cabin in the woods, anywhere that felt different. When I finally started taking those trips as an adult, I realized the hardest part was never getting there. It was leaving Baltimore. The city has a way of pulling you back. That’s the feeling The Baltimore Trail came from.”
With endearing pixel art and a variety of familiar Maryland tropes, Dexter’s new game shows us exactly how Baltimore earned the nickname Charm City.
What Is The Baltimore Trail?

The Baltimore Trail is a free internet game that features a gameplay loop where players attempt to escape 320 miles down the Chesapeake Bay to reach the open water. You can play it on a computer or mobile device, so anybody can try it out. Players must manage resources, like crab cakes and gas, in order to eventually make it to the end, with a fishing mini-game offering a fun escape from the road trip.
One thing that players may immediately notice is that The Baltimore Trail is brimming with charm. You can choose from a variety of pre-made personalities, such as the ‘Ravens Superfan’ and ‘Hampden Hon,’ offering ample choices.
Once your journey has begun, players can grab a slice of Frank’s pizza or fish for blue crabs in classic Maryland style. A wide range of Baltimore-themed encounters adds a sense of mystery to your journey, as you never know what you might encounter on the road.

Dexter shared with The BayNet that most of the inspiration for what happens in The Baltimore Trail was inspired by her real-life memories or the experiences of her close friends.
“A lot of what happens in the game comes from real experiences, either mine or friends’. I wanted it to be honest about that push and pull while still being a love letter to the city and the wider Maryland area. Baltimore has a complicated reputation, but the people here are what make it special, and I wanted that to come through in every part of the game.”

The game itself is a great way to immerse yourself in Baltimore culture, and it’s received a fantastic reception so far on social media. Dexter originally posted The Baltimore Trail to r/Baltimore on Reddit, where her original post has garnered 400 upvotes and more than 60 comments.
“The response has been amazing. People have reached out to tell me they see pieces of their own lives in it and are having a lot of fun playing the game,” said Dexter. “There are also a few hidden audio Easter eggs that players have started finding. Those mean a lot to me because they’re tied to some personal memories and experiences!”
The top comment by Ok-Tourist4907 on the original Reddit post reads, “This is the most wonderful thing I’ve seen in a long time.” Sleeper_Saturn also commented, “This is so cool! Thanks for sharing!”
The creation of The Baltimore Trail is a beautiful tribute to the state of Maryland, and it offers a glimpse into the daily lives of people who reside in Charm City. If you grew up in Maryland, then The Baltimore Trail might just be your next favorite video game.
