โ€œThese numbers are very positive,โ€ said St. Maryโ€™s County Public Schools (SMCPS) Superintendent Dr. Michael Martirano on a report of class sizes for the beginning of the school year. That report was unveiled to the school board Wednesday by Executive Director of Elementary Schools and Title 1 Kelly Hall and Executive Director of Secondary Schools and School Improvement Scott Smith.

A chart was shown with the school systems goals and caps and then the actual class sizes for the last school year and so far this school year. The class sizes are an aggregate for all schools and do not reflect the fact that some individual classrooms are still over the cap.

Pre-K has no goal or cap; its actual size for last school year was 19.6 versus 20.5 this year. Pre-K is the only category that has shown an increase year to year.

The goal for full-day kindergarten is 20 and the cap is 23; last year it was 21.5 and this year 20.65.

The goal for grades 1-2 is 21 and the cap is 24; the actual was 22.9 last year and 22.01 this year.

The goal for grades 3-5 is 23 with a 29 cap; the actual last year was 24.4 and this year 22.07.

The goal for both middle and high schools is 25 and there is no cap. The actual for middle schools last year was 19.03 and it has come down to 18.61 this year. For high schools last year the class size was 23.31. This year it is 22.16.

The two supervisors also presented a chart showing class size ranges. They are:
