Maryland Drivers Warned: Social Media Scams Selling Fake Plates, Fraudulent Insurance

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Police are warning Maryland drivers to be cautious of online scams involving fake license plates, counterfeit insurance cards, and fraudulent vehicle registrations that are increasingly being sold through social media and online marketplaces.

According to the Anne Arundel County Police Department, officers have encountered a growing number of vehicles displaying “unofficial” plates or carrying invalid documentation purchased from illegitimate third-party services. Investigators say many of these operations pose as legitimate businesses but are not authorized by the state.

“These fake documents can cost drivers far more than they realize,” police said in a statement. “People risk fines, vehicle impoundments, and even criminal charges — all because they trusted an unverified source.”

Law enforcement officials urge residents to confirm the legitimacy of any vehicle-related service directly through the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA). The MVA provides a searchable database of licensed title service agents and dealers to help consumers verify a company before paying for services.

Police also reminded drivers that using invalid insurance coverage can leave them financially responsible in the event of a crash. To confirm an insurance company’s legitimacy, motorists can contact the Maryland Insurance Administration or refer to its Consumer Guide to Auto Insurance.

Residents are encouraged to report suspected fraudulent operations to local police or the MVA’s Office of Investigations and Internal Affairs.

Police say the bottom line is simple: use only verified, official state channels. “Don’t become a victim,” their statement reads. “If it sounds too easy or too cheap, it’s probably not legitimate.”
