CALIFORNIA, Md. — Southern Maryland residents can officially add another breakfast and brunch option to their dining plans.
First Watch, a national breakfast, brunch and lunch restaurant chain, is slated to open in the former Panera Bread location at South Plaza Shopping Center in California, according to updated leasing information from the shopping center’s owner, Brixmor Property Group. The company’s online tenant directory now lists First Watch as the occupant of the 5,000-square-foot storefront adjacent to Five Guys.

The announcement confirms months of local speculation surrounding the vacant space after Panera Bread closed its California location earlier this year. While rumors of a First Watch opening had circulated throughout the community, the updated shopping center site plan provides the first public confirmation of the restaurant’s future arrival.
Founded in California — the state of Florida, not Maryland — First Watch has expanded rapidly across the country, building a reputation for made-to-order breakfast, brunch and lunch offerings. The daytime café is known for menu items such as avocado toast, omelets, seasonal specialties, fresh juices and its popular “Million Dollar Bacon.”

The addition marks another national restaurant investment in St. Mary’s County’s retail corridor along Route 235. South Plaza Shopping Center is home to several major retailers and restaurants, including Best Buy, Old Navy, Ross Dress for Less, Petco and Five Guys.
An opening date has not yet been announced, and First Watch has not publicly released details regarding construction timelines, hiring plans or the restaurant’s anticipated debut.
For many local breakfast enthusiasts, however, confirmation alone is welcome news as the former Panera space prepares for a new chapter.
Additional information, including opening dates and hiring announcements, is expected to be released as the project moves forward.
