Masked Man With Knife: Brandywine Man Charged In Waldorf Assault

WALDORF, Md. — A Brandywine man was charged after investigators allege he approached another man near a Waldorf bus stop while wearing a mask and displaying a knife.

Calvin Chris Cherry, 44, of Brandywine, was charged July 10, 2026, with first-degree assault, second-degree assault and trespassing on private property.

According to charging documents, officers with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded at approximately 8:17 a.m. to the 3600 block of Robert S. Crain Highway for a reported assault involving a weapon.

The victim told officers he had checked out of the Super 8 Motel and walked to the Smallwood Drive West park-and-ride lot to wait for a bus.

While he was waiting, Cherry allegedly approached him wearing a mask and threatened to stab him with a knife.

The victim ran across Crain Highway and called police. He reportedly remained in the median to avoid Cherry before walking back toward the motel parking lot.

Officers detained Cherry and reported finding a silver knife with a black handle in a case around his neck. He was also allegedly wearing a black-and-gray face covering on top of his head.

Cherry told officers the victim had repeatedly knocked on his motel room door between July 9 and July 10, but the victim denied knowing him, charging documents state.

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from the motel and allegedly confirmed Cherry was on the property despite having previously been barred from the business.

Court documents state Cherry was uncooperative during the investigation. The Charles County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team was staged at the detention center because of concerns about his behavior during processing.

Cherry was initially held without bond July 10. Judge Kenneth A. Talley released him on his own recognizance following a bail review hearing July 13.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 5, 2026, in Charles County District Court.
