The Calvert County League of Women Voters (LWV) sponsored an election forum at Huntingtown High School on Sept. 7, for county candidates with competition in the Primary election Tuesday.

This is the first in a series of three video news articles from the forum. Later today The Bay Net will feature articles on the Maryland Delegate district 27a candidates and the 17 candidates for Calvert County Commissioner who attended the forum.

The three videos here show introductions for the sheriff candidates, (Don Brenneman (D), Joe McKenny (D) Rodney Barlett (R) and current Sheriff Mike Evans (R)), and responses to questions about police officers assigned to schools, the war on drugs and community policing.

In addition to the candidate responses included in the videos, below is a transcript of additional LWV questions answered by the candidates.

LWV Questions

PUBLIC SAFETY:ย  The backbone of every police department is the uniformed patrol division.ย  High visibility of marked cars in our communities, shopping centers and near our schools would improve our public safety.

CRIME: To identify the areas where crime has increased.ย  To target those areas for selective enforcement.ย  Additional uniformed patrol deputies in our communities, shopping centers.ย  Meeting with the neighborhood watch and HOAs and identify those problem areas.

PUBLIC SAFETY: My first public safety priority is placing more deputies on our streets to protect the citizens of Calvert County. I will achieve this by properly managing our deputies and resources already available. I will then work closelyย  with the County Commissioners to secure necessary funding to enhance public safety.

CRIME: Police presence is the most effective crime deterrent. By placing deputies in our neighborhoods and business districts will help deter and reduce crime. By implementing a volunteer police program, we can increase police presence and free up more deputies to protect our citizens and their property.
