Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today in recognition of Memorial Day, which is observed onย Monday, May 26:
โI join in honoring the fallen heroes of our nation this Memorial Day and in upholding our shared responsibility to comfort and care for the loved ones and communities they left behind. From the trenches of World War I, whose centennial we observe this year, to the beaches of Normandy seventy years ago, from Vietnam and Korea to Iraq and Afghanistan, the courage and sacrifice of our service members has no equal.
โAs we remember our fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines, let us continue to ensure that our men and women serving in uniform have our support and our prayers – and that we keep faith with our military personnel, our veterans, and their families.ย ย And let us make certain that Congress always meets its commitment to those who put their lives on the line for our nation and the values we hold dear.โ
The following is a statement from Charles Lollar, Republican candidate for governor:
This Memorial Day we salute and honor those men and women who have served our great Nation in war and who sacrificed life and their sacred honor to preserve our freedom and liberty.
We are a Nation where our men and women volunteer to defend our shores, promote freedom and protect those at the mercy of tyranny.
Our Nation must always serve as the worldโs beacon to preserve the inalienable rights that are endowed us by our Creator โ not by any government.
As Americans, individual liberty and freedom are in our DNA. Freedom to start a business, grow a family and cast a vote that matters.

I am grateful for their service, but today belongs to their brothers and sisters whoโve given all to defend our way of life. Their bravery reminds us once again of the courage of those whoโve served and their willingness to sacrifice on our behalf.
If what President John F. Kennedy said is true: โA nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces but also by the men it honors, the men it remembers,โ there is no better place to do just that than here, in Southern Maryland.
If weโve learned anything from the wars in which we have fought over the 13 years, itโs that courage and sacrifice are not proprietary values that belong to a bygone generation.
Not that long ago, a Marine named Corporal Jason Dunham was leading a patrol along Iraqโs Syrian border when he got word that a nearby Marine convoy was being ambushed. He led his patrol to the site of the attack. While halting a convoy of cars, the Marines began a search. An insurgent jumped out, grabbing Corporal Dunham by the throat.
