St. Maryโ€™s College of Maryland will hold a memorial gathering to honor the life and work of former SMCM professor and poet Lucille Clifton Saturday, April 10, at 7:30 p.m. in Montgomery Hall, Room 25, on the St. Maryโ€™s College campus.

The memorial is named โ€œThe Light that Still is Lucille,โ€ and its theme will be โ€œRemembering, Celebrating, Carrying Forward.โ€ This event is free and open to the public. The college is collecting written remembrances of Clifton to share at the event. Remembrances will be posted on a โ€œMemorial Wallโ€ created for the occasion, as well as collected for the collegeโ€™s archives. Some also will be printed in an upcoming River Gazette.
ย
โ€œCentral to this event will be not only our remembrances, but also the sharing of the understandings and strength that so many of us gained from our interactions with Lucille,โ€ said Michael Glaser, professor emeritus at SMCM and close friend of Clifton. โ€œWe hope the evening will help us not only remember, but also explore how we might keep Lucilleโ€™s insights, wisdom, and values alive in the world by carrying them forward, by embodying them in our daily lives, and bringing them into the circles of our various communities.โ€

Please send remembrances no later than March 25 to Glaser at msglaser@smcm.edu or by mail to The Lucille Clifton Memorial, St. Maryโ€™s College of Maryland, St. Maryโ€™s City, MD 20686-3001.
