GHENT, Wv. – Picture this: You’ve just crested a brutal climb, weighted pack digging into your shoulders, legs trembling from the grade. Your heart hammers in your chest as you approach the shooting station.
The target waits at 40 yards. You draw, settle your pin, and release. That’s when you know—all those hours of training weren’t just about winning a race. They were about building the strength and nerve to perform when everything in your body wants to quit.
On May 1-2, 2026, that moment becomes real at Winterplace Ski Resort for the Appalachian Bowhunter Challenge-and there’s room for you to be part of it.

The Challenge That Brings Us Together
Mountain hunters are a different breed. We’re drawn to steep terrain, rugged country, and the kind of hunting that tests every part of who we are. We train in the offseason not just for competition, but to prepare for those moments when physical and mental strength determine success or failure-whether that’s in September backcountry, November steep hollows, or any mountain pursuit that demands our best.
The Appalachian Bowhunter Challenge was designed for mountain hunters, by mountain hunters. It’s two days of exactly what we need: steep climbs, physical challenges, and shooting under the kind of pressure that mimics real hunting conditions.
What You’ll Experience:
Friday’s Mountain Challenge 5K sends you up Flat Top Mountain with a weighted pack-1,000 feet of climbing over 3 miles with challenge stations that’ll humble even the fittest athletes. You’ll shoot before and after the loop, learning to control your breath and focus when your body is screaming.
Saturday’s 3D Course presents 15-20 realistic hunting scenarios-kneeling shots, moving targets, and the kind of angles you face in mountain country. Then comes the Head-to-Head bracket: sprint-and-shoot battles where you’ll carry sandbags, drag sleds, and put arrows on target while your competitors watch. It’s intense, it’s fun, and it’s the best kind of suffering.

The Real Prize: Finding Your People
Yes, you’ll get stronger. Yes, you’ll shoot better under stress. And yes, Stone Glacier gear for winners is an incredible prize.
But the real reward? The camaraderie forged between rounds. The hunting partners you’ll gain.
The stories you’ll trade over recovery products provided by Wilderness Athlete. This community understands why we chase mountain fitness-because when the moment comes and you’re drawing on the animal you’ve pursued through rugged terrain, all those training hours will matter.
The bonds formed at events like this turn into hunting partnerships, shared adventures, and a network of people who get it. This tribe supports each other, pushes each other, and celebrates the challenge together.
