NEWBURG, Md. — The Maryland Veterans Museum at Patriot Park will soon be home to the nation’s first memorial dedicated to honoring the role of service dogs in the lives of America’s veterans.
The Veterans Service Dog Memorial will stand as a permanent tribute to the animals who provide critical support for veterans living with post-traumatic stress disorder, mobility challenges and other service-related conditions. Organizers describe the dogs as “guardians, healers, and silent warriors” whose loyalty helps save lives.
According to the Veterans Service Dog Memorial website, “These four-legged heroes give everything to those who gave everything for us. They are not just dogs — they are heroes with four paws.”
According to the museum, the memorial is intended to raise awareness of how service dogs bridge isolation, prevent suicide and restore a sense of connection for veterans. For many, the animals are not only companions but also lifelines that help them reclaim independence and community.

The project launch was promoted during National Service Dog Month, with organizers emphasizing its historic importance. “Celebrate the launch of America’s first memorial specifically dedicated to veteran service dogs during National Service Dog Month,” an announcement for the project stated.
The memorial will be located on the museum’s grounds at 11000 Crain Highway North in Newburg, ensuring the stories of service dogs are remembered and shared with future generations.
Community members are invited to attend the official kickoff event on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at the Maryland Veterans Museum at Patriot Park, 11000 Crain Highway in Newburg. The event is open to the public. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP by Sept. 10 to Sarge@Boots2Benefits.com or 443-924-6809.
