WALDORF, Md. — If your yard needs a refresh or your to-do list is getting a little too long, a group of local scouts may be ready to help.

Troop 417 Waldorf is bringing energy and teamwork to neighborhoods through its “Hire-A-Scout” program — a hands-on way for residents to get help while supporting local youth.

From raking leaves and laying mulch to pulling weeds, moving stones and tackling small projects, scouts have been rolling up their sleeves and getting the job done. They’ve also helped with painting, grocery runs, walking assistance and even car washing.

A parent involved with the troop said the program has taken off through word of mouth, with more families reaching out after seeing the scouts in action.

Over the past three seasons, the troop has completed more than 60 hours of service for local families — and they’re just getting started.

“We’ve helped members of the local community for three seasons now, and we have a blast,” the scout parent shared.

The program isn’t just about getting work done — it’s about building confidence, learning responsibility and connecting with the community. Scouts, ages 13 to 17, are assigned in pairs and always work alongside a troop-approved adult supervisor who stays onsite. All supervisors are trained in first aid and CPR.

Troop 417 serves areas within a 10-mile radius of St. Peters Church in Waldorf. Each request is reviewed ahead of time to make sure it’s a good fit, and residents are asked to provide any materials needed for the job. A hold harmless agreement is also required before work begins.

For families, it’s a simple way to check off tasks. For the scouts, it’s real-world experience and a chance to give back.

And for the community, it’s a win-win.
